Honor - Mother’s Day 2012

The next day there was a wedding celebration in the village of Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the celebration. The wine supply ran out during the festivities, so Jesus’ mother told him, “They have no more wine.” “Dear woman, that’s not our problem,” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.” But his mother told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Standing nearby were six stone water jars, used for Jewish ceremonial washing. Each could hold twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” When the jars had been filled, he said, “Now dip some out, and take it to the master of ceremonies.” So the servants followed his instructions. When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come from (though, of course, the servants knew), he called the bridegroom over. “A host always serves the best wine first,” he said. “Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!” This miraculous sign at Cana in Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed his glory. And his disciples believed in him. After the wedding he went to Capernaum for a few days with his mother, his brothers, and his disciples. John 2:1-12 (NLT)

Mothers: Believe in their children.

Children: Honor your mother.

Honor your father and mother—which is the first commandment with a promise— so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth. Ephesians 6:2-3 (NIV)

* Honor is valuing the good, and seeing the gold in someone’s life.

* Honor is reflected and expressed by my thoughts, words and deeds.

* Honor is choosing to do good toward another individual.

* Honor is protecting another individual, seeking their safety and well being.

Practical ways to show honor to your mother:

1. Tell her.

Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all. Proverbs 31:28-31 (NIV)

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her, so that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of the water with the word... Ephesians 5:25-26 (NAS)

2. Find ways to be helpful.

Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Ephesians 4:2 (NIV)

3. Give gifts that speak her love language.

Love does not demand its own way. I Corinthians 13:5 (LB)

4. Be in the moment. Stop, look, listen.

So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church.. Ephesians 5:28-29 (NAS)

Your attitude (toward each other) should be the same as that of Jesus Christ. Philippians 2:5 (NIV)
